Mandatory coverage

In Canada, your minimum coverage depends on where you live. Find out how auto insurance works where you live. Here’s a quick look at some of these types of coverage:

Accident Benefits
Accident Benefits cover medical expenses, income replacement or funeral costs in case of an accident.
Direct Compensation Property Damage
If you’re in an accident that’s not your fault, this coverage takes care of your vehicle and everything in it.
Liability
Covers your obligations for causing injuries or property damage if you're found responsible for causing an accident.
Uninsured Automobile
Ever wonder who pays the damages if you’re involved in an accident with an uninsured driver? This coverage helps take care of the costs arising from injury, or worse.

Extra coverage

Want added peace of mind? You can increase the amount of coverage on your vehicle, or you can add on additional coverage. Options vary by province. Here are some optional types of coverage to explore:

Accident Protection

Don’t let one mistake affect your car insurance premiums. Add this coverage to your policy and your first at-fault accident won’t affect your premiums.

All Perils

This coverage combines Collision and Comprehensive coverage and protects your vehicle against theft by a person who lives in your household or an employee.

Collision

This covers the cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle if you cause an accident.

Comprehensive

If your car is damaged or stolen, this coverage will help you repair or replace it.2

Depreciation Protection

If you buy a new vehicle and have a total loss claim within the first five years, this coverage protects your vehicle’s value from depreciation.

Loss or damage to your automobile and equipment

This covers you for any insured loss or damage to your vehicle and its equipment, such as the stereo.

2 Comprehensive doesn’t insure your car against theft if a member of your household steals your car, or if an employee whose job involved using or maintaining the car steals your vehicle.
