Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF)

Enjoy a flexible income during retirement. Open a RRIF today.

Meet your retirement income account

When you retire, funds from your Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) can be transferred to a RRIF. Think of it as a registered account that’s an extension of your RRSP. But instead of making contributions, you’re taking money out while continuing to manage your portfolio.

Benefits of a RRIF

Tax-sheltered growth

Your earnings in your RRIF are tax-sheltered until you withdraw them, helping you stretch out your retirement savings even further.

Customizable income

You can decide how much to take out as long as you withdraw the minimum amount each year.

Transferrable assets

When you pass away, money in your RRIF can be transferred to a beneficiary’s RRIF.

When to open a RRIF?

You can transfer your RRSP savings to a RRIF at any time, but no later than December 31 of the year you turn 71.

How to invest with a RRIF

You’ll need different RRIF accounts to invest your savings in different ways. For example, segregated fund and mutual fund investments cannot be combined into the same RRIF account. The types of products you choose depend on your risk tolerance and goals.
