Youth and Education programs
Young people are best poised to advocate for their needs and to facilitate positive social change that addresses the needs of their communities. However, there are also many youth who face a wide variety of challenging issues. The Co-operators partners with community organizations who provide support to youth and to organizations that provide youth leadership programs.
Kids Help Phone
Kids Help Phone gives kids a chance to talk to a counsellor anonymously if they have problems that a parent, teacher or friend may not understand. Our sponsorship supports their enhanced counselling service, which gives kids a safe and trusted place to turn when they are facing a crisis.
In addition, with our support (along with founding supporter Movember Canada Foundation, and Microsoft, Cisco and Shaw Communications), Kids Help Phone can now make fundamental changes to the ways in which young men reach out and access the help they need. In 2015, BroTalk™ was launched, Canada’s first service focused specifically on addressing young men’s mental health issues. It is a support zone for teen males ages 14-18, consisting of professional counselling, a mobile-friendly website and downloadable chat app. All content and materials were developed and tested with teen males, a process that started in 2013.
Co-operative Youth and Young Leaders Programs
The aim of these programs is to contribute to the personal development of youth and encourage their active involvement in community and co-operative organizations. Through interactive and engaging activities young people gain an increased understanding of co-operatives, credit unions, and the skills and self-confidence to become co-operative members, employees, and leaders in their communities.
